President’s Charity of the Year announced!
The Newbury & District Agricultural Society are pleased to announce the Mary Hare Foundation has been chosen as the President’s Charity of the Year.
The Mary Hare Foundation raises funds to support the Mary Hare School for Deaf Children from all over the UK. The School is situated on Snelsmore Common, outside Newbury.
Mary Hare School came to its current site in 1946 after the death of Miss Mary Hare. This remarkable woman set up the school to educate deaf children through written and spoken English and thus enable them to access the full curriculum.
Since this time Mary Hare School has educated hundreds of deaf children, from the age of 5 – 18 years. It is a unique school, being the only special school in the country to offer deaf children access to GCSEs and A levels, supported by specialist teachers of the deaf and a range of other specialist support.
The School receives funds from many Local Authorities for the children who attend. However this fee only covers the cost of teaching and caring for the children whilst at school. All other developments depend on donations and fundraising. Since it was created The Mary Hare Foundation has raised more than £8 million for the improvement of the facilities for the pupils. The most recent was the renovation of the swimming pool and an addition to the Year 7 boarding house.
One pupil who joined Mary Hare at the age of 11 said: “Thank you for turning my life around and making me feel proud to be deaf. It has made me feel happy in my learning environment. I have found that being at Mary Hare School has improved my confidence. I have lots of new friends and I am now very happy and really enjoy school life.”
Peter Gale, Principal of Mary Hare School; “I am really delighted that the Society President has chosen Mary Hare as its nominated charity in 2017. Our pupils have always enjoyed attending, especially those pupils from our vocational courses programme who enter animals in the show. I would like to thank the President and all the organisers for their support in this way."
Kirsten Loyd, Society President; “I am incredibly proud to be a Governor of the school and Chairman of Trustees for the Foundation. The staff at Mary Hare School do a wonderful job in safe guarding the future of deaf children.”
