New President & Chairman for 2018 Berkshire Show announced

The Newbury & District Agricultural Society are pleased to introduce Peter Carlisle, Show President and Ian Wilson, Show Chairman for The Royal County of Berkshire Show 2018.

Peter Carlisle was born at Hackpen Farm, Wroughton in Wiltshire where he lived with his father Norman, mother Anne and brother David. The family moved to Rowles Farm, West Ilsley in 1969 and this is where Peter still lives with his wife Sandra, twin sons Will and Tom, who have joined the family farm, and their daughter Georgina who is currently working overseas in Singapore.

Peter went to Wycliffe College, Stonehouse in Gloucestershire at the age of 13 and then in 1977 spent three years at Reading University studying for a Degree in Agriculture. He knew that because of his passion for farming and love of the Berkshire countryside he was destined to join the family farm full-time in West Ilsley.

Whilst farming has always been important to Peter, he spent any free time playing rugby for Newbury Rugby Football Club during the winter months, and cricket for the West Ilsley Cricket Club during the Summer. He was also actively involved in the Great Shefford Young Farmers’ Club which meant that he met many members of the local farming community.

“2018 is going to be a very interesting year working closely with Ian Wilson, the Chairman, not only participating in what will be an exciting and truly memorable show but also being involved in the many other events throughout the year.”

Ian Wilson first attended the Show back in 1964, when he was 9 months old. His father was a sheep steward, and as Ian grew up he started to help his father with various jobs such as putting up sheep hurdles. Ian then became a sheep steward when he was 14 years old and, over the years, progressed to Section Head.

Since his early days, Ian has worked in the Showground office, he was Chairman of the Ploughing Match, Chairman of Local Competitions and most recently, Section Head for Carpark and Traffic Management.

Ian grew up in Enbourne and then moved to East Ilsley where he still lives with his wife, Francesca and their 3 children, Ella, Henry and Tilly.

“I’m really looking forward to my year as Chairman of the Show. Peter and I have a very busy schedule ahead of us, but we’re very much looking forward to meeting everyone on our journey. We have a lot of new and exciting changes happening at the Show this year and plans are coming together well.”
